A regional consultative meeting on issues facing the automobile industry was held between Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and representatives of nine Asian countries in Seoul, Korea, in December 2001. The main goal of the meeting was to broaden mutual understanding on global and regional issues related to automotive industry sector and to establish greater cooperation among the participating countries. This publication is a compilation of the documents that were presented at this meeting. The book is divided into four parts: the first covers the changing nature of the Asian automobile industry, the second part provides an analysis of the automobile industry in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand, the third part offers a diagnosis of production elements, and the final part presents the summary of conclusions and recommendations from the meeting....
